On the water, early summer, mid-evening. The sun is descending. Clouds turn mauve and purple. Horizontal light reflects from a thousand Toronto windows. Here without doubt, is a photograph worth capturing. But can I induce a gull to enhance it further?

Every time a bird ventures between the camera and shore, I snap wildly. But each one turns out to be off-center or blurred with speed. My arms are getting tired.

And then a seagull wheels into the space above the city, rapturous in the breeze, light glinting from the leading edge of its wings, its trajectory drawing our eye down toward the brilliant urban reflections.
