Enjoying an espresso at a main street cafe, we don’t guess that a wall in the alleyway behind the shop holds this painting of a sad, determined woman. Although her image is mocked by the detritus of city life, she maintains her power and dignity.

One of the reasons I photograph wall art is because it’s so transient. In a few years, this image may be painted over by renovators, peeled away by polluted air, or obscured by more careless mud - any of which would be an offense against her timeless humanity.

I think of photography as a way of capturing fleeting moments that few may have seen in quite the same way, and of publishing them as an act of respect. I dare to hope that this particular image may long persist in homage to its subject.
